International Neurosurgery: Brain tumor and Aneurysm Surgery
Neurosurgery is a specialized field of surgery implemented to treat diseases of CNS (central nervous system), brain, spinal cord, vertebral column and/or peripheral nerve disorders.
A neurosurgeon at InternationalDoctor.com is already an MD having received extensive training in the field of neurology and Neurosurgery. The training they receive includes surgical and medical management of neurological diseases including brain tumor and brain aneurysm.
Brain Tumor
All parts of the body are made up of cells that often grow normally and divide in order to create new cells. But when cells stop growing normally or dying off naturally, they start to produce extra cells that eventually form tumors. A brain tumor is therefore an abnormal growth of tissue in the brain.
Some of the most common signs of brain tumor that are observed more frequently include:
- Severe headaches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Unusual drowsiness
- Lack of coordination
- Seizures
- Weakness/loss of feelings in the arms and legs
- Memory loss/weakness
- Speech problems
We normally recommend the surgery option when the brain tumor is accessible and can be removed without causing serious neurological damage. The general goal of any brain tumor surgery is basically to remove the tumor as mush as possible (a.k.a. debulking).
Brain Aneurysm
Of all of the blood that the heart pumps, the brain needs the most because it uses more energy than any other part of the body. The blood vessels at the base of the brain, therefore, must have the capability to control the blood volume and pressure to supply the brain in different situations. When we lie down or jump up, for example, the vessels constrict or open up automatically to prevent the brain from receiving more or less blood than needed. So these blood vessels must have smooth muscle – to relax and tighten -, elasticity – to keep their shape - and an electric feedback system.
Patients with brain aneurysm have an inborn problem with the elasticity part of blood vessels of brain. This means that the elastic layer is not formed properly and that they are being organized randomly rather than regularly. Consequently, the weaker part of the blood vessel begins to bulge and balloon over the years. The bulge is actually called the "aneurysm".
The symptoms of a brain aneurysm (before it happens) can include headache or dizziness, which usually tend to be unnoticed. Moreover, the symptoms that occur before the rupture of the brain aneurysm, appear only in 40% of patients. However, when a brain aneurysm is about to happen, the patient usually complains about their stiff neck and starts to vomit.
International Doctor team normally implements brain aneurysm surgery once the patient’s condition is stable and the support team is fully assembled. The aim of the brain aneurysm surgery at this stage is to prevent re-bleeding. What takes place is like tying off a balloon and the surgeon focuses on clippings of the brain aneurysm at its neck.
Our neurosurgeons work together with other International Doctor practitioners including psychiatrists, neurologists and therapists to provide comprehensive care for our patients with neurological disorders.
